NYC Mayoral Election
Wed, Jun. 25th, 2025 09:01 amCongrats Zohran Mamdani on declaring victory in the Democratic mayoral primary of NYC! I am not (or... no longer?) a resident of da big apple but I am notoriously #CityPilled and live a walk away CT-NY border so my social media algorithms have dropping many an update on the race on my feeds. However, my proximity to the city isn't the only reason Mamdani's campaign has been in my sights; after all, even those from the West coast are celebrating his win in the Dems primary. That's because over the past few months, or even weeks, Mamdani has become a candidate that so many progressives and leftists have hope in. He's a young, muslim immigrant who proudly calls himself a democratic socialist (a word that Republicans used against their foes in the 2024 election to win based on reactionary fear). People from around the U.S. are watching him closely to see how, due largely in part to the unhappiness with Trump from even those who voted for him in 2024, someone who takes a very strong stance against him, his policies, and the right in general will do. If a self-named socialist is able to bring positive change and response in what is perhaps America's most iconic city, it could inspire similar political pushes across the board. Mamdani isn't mayor yet, though. Although he's taken the democratic nominee, which has in the past been considered a shoe-in for mayor, there is a chance that Cuomo will run as an independent in an attempt to steal the position back another way (and of course there will be a republican nominee #2_Party_System). We have also already seen a pushback against the "radical" Mamdani which if Cuomo does run independently, he will definitely use again against the democratic nominee. Anyways, hope Mamdani succeeds in the race to mayor of NYC.
